Company mandates every employee gets Friday off, team lead complains when she's scheduled 11 Fridays in a row: 'The system doesn't call it work'

A or B: My company gave everyone a four day week "for wellbeing." The scheduler has now assigned me 11 Fridays in a row. Am I wrong to ask them to honor their own policy in writing?

I'm a support team lead at a software company. Five years. Our clients are hospitals, so someone always needs to be reachable.
In March, the CEO announced we were moving to a four day week. Everyone gets Fridays off. No pay cut. The email called it "the biggest wellbeing investment in company history." It's the first line on our careers page now, and recruiters lead with it in every outreach.

Two weeks later, operations quietly rolled out a "Friday availability rotation" in the scheduling system. Someone has to cover client escalations on Fridays.

As the more senior person on the team, Friday responsibilities fell on her.

I'm the lead, so I'm on the rotation. The first month it was every other Friday. Then the other two people on the rotation left, and the system reassigned their slots to me by seniority. I've now been assigned eleven Fridays in a row. I've worked every Friday since May.

The system doesn't call it work, though. The label is "availability block." You're not scheduled for tickets. You're on call for escalations, you answer within 30 minutes, and you can't leave town or book anything. I raised it with my manager. He said, "Friday is an availability day, not a workday. You're getting the spirit of the policy."

I said I'd been reachable eleven Fridays straight and asked what the policy actually guarantees. He said the rotation is "how a four day week survives contact with reality," and that leads are expected to model flexibility.

Her manager wouldn't budge, despite her suggestions.

I asked if I could get it in writing that availability blocks count as my Friday off. He said that would "create a precedent the company isn't ready for." Meanwhile, the job posting to replace the two people who left says, in bold, "Enjoy every Friday off."

I have the schedule exports. Eleven Fridays, assigned to me, labeled availability.

A. Let it ride until the rotation is staffed again. The company kept my pay, Fridays are quieter than weekdays, and being the lead who breaks the rotation. could read as refusing part of the job I was promoted to do.

B. The policy says every Friday off. The schedule says I've worked eleven of them. Asking the company to put its own policy in writing isn't sabotage. If the answer is no, then the policy is a slogan, and it should at least be honest enough to say that out loud.

They could have staggered the work week.

Ok Stable7501 C. If they assign you Fridays, you should get Mondays off instead. Ask them which weekday you get off for wellbeing.
via Ok_Stable7501

They didn't seem to think this through.

chrisinator9393 Why don't you just propose you work tues-fri and have Monday off? It was a stupid idea to begin with giving everyone Friday off. Could've just done a 50/50 split. Half of the business works m-th and the other half tues-fri.

She was suffering from her seniority.

Kitchen_Concern_2470 would you rather work 4 days and not be the lead or 5 days and be the lead?
via Kitchen_Concern_2470

It might be time for her to move on.

radiationholder C. start looking for another job and expect for it to take a very long time to find the perfect replacement that IS a better job and DOES pay more. be extremely discreet.

She needed to carve out Fridays for herself.

Responsible_Pie905 Neither, start making doctor vision dental etc appointments for future several Fridays and let them know you are out on sick leave for the next few Fridays and that they need to be assigned to someone else.
